About Browns Point

Charles Wilkes charted this knuckle of shoreline as Point Harris in 1841, but locals soon renamed it for an early settler named Brown; a post lantern followed in 1887, and in 1903 a keeper coincidentally also named Brown — Oscar Brown — lit the new station he would tend for 36 years. Mosquito Fleet steamers dropped Tacoma families at the Browns Point and Dash Point docks for summer cottages until roads arrived in the 1920s, and the cottages slowly winterized into a year-round village. Still unincorporated Pierce County — a CDP of roughly 1,300 — Browns Point today is midcentury ramblers and split-levels stacked along view streets, with the 1933 Art Deco lighthouse tower standing on the community's front lawn. Buyers trade commute convenience for sunset water views priced well under Gig Harbor's, ten minutes from NE Tacoma schools and the Port of Tacoma.
