King County · Pop. 13,000
The name comes from a Salishan word for 'place of evil spirits' (or possibly 'thundering noise' — depending on the source) referring to the wind funneling out of the Cascades. Enumclaw was settled in 1885 around farming, logging, and the railroad up to Mount Rainier — and stayed agricultural longer than almost any other King County city. The annual King County Fair has been held here since 1921. Houses sit on much bigger lots than the rest of the county.
