Fife spent its first century as farmland. The Puyallup River delta's black soil drew Swiss and Scandinavian dairy families and Japanese berry farmers, and as late as 1940 the community was described as a thickly settled berry-growing and truck-gardening district. A community of about 850 residents narrowly voted to incorporate in February 1957, partly to fend off annexation by Tacoma, and Interstate 5's arrival in 1962 remade the flats into one of the South Sound's busiest freight and auto-retail corridors. The city sits entirely within the Puyallup Reservation, and the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge over the river honors the tribe's fishing-rights stand. For buyers, Fife is commute math that works: newer townhomes and 1990s-to-2000s subdivisions tucked behind the highway strip, Dacca Park and Brookville Gardens as the green center, priced a step below Tacoma's North End and far below King County across the line.
