About Midland

Midland never incorporated — and never needed to. Ezra and Oliver Meeker staked adjoining claims on what pioneers called Puyallup Hill in 1855, decades before the Olympic Land Company recorded the Midland townsite plat in April 1890. The name came from the trolley: Midland sat at the halfway point of the Tacoma–Puyallup streetcar line, and the young community clustered around 99th and Portland Avenue. Small farms and a sawmill spur followed the rails, then postwar ramblers filled the prairie between Tacoma's city limits and Parkland. Today the census-designated place holds about 10,000 people under Pierce County governance, served by Franklin Pierce schools. For buyers, Midland is one of the metro's last close-in value plays — big lots, mid-century solids, and new infill minutes from I-5, Highway 512, and the Tacoma Dome, at prices well under Tacoma's North End.
