About Orting

Orting incorporated in April 1889, months before Washington achieved statehood — a rail stop the Northern Pacific had named back in 1877. The valley floor between the Puyallup and Carbon rivers grew hops for export until aphids collapsed the crop; from the 1920s the same soil turned to daffodil bulbs, and the town still celebrates the Daffodil Festival each spring. The state built its Soldiers Home here in 1891, and the campus still anchors the south end of town. For buyers, Orting is the valley's value play: master-planned subdivisions from the 1990s onward sell below Puyallup and well below Bonney Lake, with Rainier filling the windshield on the drive home. The trade-offs are honest ones — a two-lane SR 162 commute and the lahar sirens the town drills faithfully — in exchange for small-town Washington Avenue and the Foothills Trail out the back door.
