Founded around the coal mines of the 1860s, Renton became a Boeing town when the company opened the 737 plant on the south end of Lake Washington in the 1960s. Half the world's 737s roll off that line. The city's identity has shifted in the last twenty years from blue-collar industrial to a balanced mix of waterfront residential, downtown reinvestment, and the hill neighborhoods (Highlands, Kennydale) that buyers from Seattle keep discovering.
