About South Hill

South Hill was never a town so much as a plateau with plans. The 1850s military road over Naches Pass brought the first wagons across the tableland above the Puyallup River valley, and by the 1880s logging camps and hop farms had claimed the benchland — until the hop-louse blight of 1891 pushed growers toward berries and pumpkin patches. It stayed farmland deep into the postwar era; then SR 512 climbed the hill, the South Hill Mall opened in 1988, and the fields turned to cul-de-sacs almost overnight. Still unincorporated, South Hill is now Pierce County's largest census-designated place at nearly 65,000 people — a grid of 1990s-to-2010s subdivisions where buyers trade downtown Puyallup's Victorian charm for newer construction, more square footage per dollar, Rogers and Emerald Ridge schools, and a straight shot down Meridian to everything.
