About Tumwater

Named for the Tumwater Falls on the Deschutes River — 'tum tum' meaning the heart-beat sound of the falls in Chinook Jargon — Tumwater is the oldest American settlement on Puget Sound (1845, predates Olympia). The Olympia Brewing Company opened here in 1896 and the city's identity has been wrapped up in the falls and the brewery ever since. Even after the brewery closed in 2003, the building still anchors the skyline.
